LEAD Group President Elizabeth O’Brien was delighted to hand out 29 of the 44 prizes in the 2014 Volcano Art Prize yesterday at the Award Ceremony at Hampden Park Public School in Lakemba in Sydney’s west. It was the only Australian event to mark the World Health Organisation’s 2nd International Lead Poisoning Awareness Week of Action – a week instigated by Elizabeth O’Brien. See Elizabeth’s President’s Report to read of the Group’s achievements in FY 2014 and check out the beautiful artworks from art teacher Alice Ju and the students at Hampden Park.

Examples of great images with excellent lead-safety messages:
I am writing to tell you about The LEAD Group’s Volcano Art Prize (VAP) which has just opened for entries from anyone anywhere in the world. Sponsored by a global environment group and health promotion charity, The LEAD Group Inc, entry to the prize is FREE for children and for adults in non-OECD countries. Entrants over the age of 18 in OECD countries only pay AU$10 to enter.
Create an image that illustrates a lead-safety message and upload it at www.volcanoartprize.com/submitentry for your chance to win. The artwork can be created using any medium; painting, sculpture, printmaking, digital graphics; Photoshop etc., ceramics, collage, photography, or anything else that takes your fancy. Just scan it if its scannable, take a picture if its not, or simply save it if its a digital work, and head along to the website to upload it.
The competition has a number of prizes including a calendar/catalogue, accession into The LEAD Group Art Collection and a cash prize for the Peoples Choice to be decided by Facebook likes. Entries for the competition must be uploaded by Monday October 1, 2014 with a launch of the art prize at the NSW Parliament House on Monday 22 October 2014.
President of The LEAD Group Elizabeth OBrien explained the origin of VAP this way: ”In our lead-safe future, the only source of lead in air, will be volcanoes.” According to the VAP Manager, artist Tony Lennon, ”This is not just any art competition but an attempt to put art on the front line of social and political change in the world.
The judge for the competition is the renowned artist and art teacher Julian Wrigley.”
