Lead-safety Message: Both the pectin in regular citrus zest and in modified citrus pectin (MCP) can bind to lead inside your digestive tract and help push it out through your stool. Because regular pectin stays in the gut, it cannot reach lead stored in your tissues and organs, whereas MCP has been shown to enter the bloodstream to detox lead without removing essential minerals.
